Cross-border prescription – what should you know about it?
What is a cross-border prescription?
A cross-border prescription is a medical document issued by a physician that meets the requirements of European Union law and allows for the dispensing of medication in pharmacies outside the issuing country. It includes, among other things, patient information, physician details and license number, the international name of the active substance (INN), the dosage and form of the medication, and the physician's signature. This allows a pharmacist abroad to dispense a locally available equivalent.
Where can I get my prescription filled?
EU and EEA countries: In these countries, cross-border prescriptions are generally honored in accordance with EU regulations. Dimedic doctors do not issue cross-border prescriptions for dispensing in the UK or Ireland. The pharmacy may: issue a substitute instead of the identical brand name, charge the full fee (without Polish reimbursement), or require a printed document.
What medications can you get?
A doctor can issue prescriptions for medications used to treat common conditions and for continuing therapy, including: hormonal contraception, chronic conditions (thyroid, hypertension, diabetes), dermatology, allergies, infections, and other medications requiring a prescription. Dimedic doctors do not issue cross-border prescriptions for: narcotics and strong pain relievers (opioids), psychotropic medications, or strictly regulated medications. The final decision always rests with the pharmacist.
Cross-border prescription and Polish e-prescription – differences
Polish prescriptions (SMS/IKP codes) are valid primarily in Poland. They are usually not redeemable abroad. Therefore, if you plan to purchase medications in another country, you'll need a cross-border prescription document with full medical information.
What should you remember before visiting the pharmacy?
Practical tips: have an ID document, check the name of the active substance (not the trade name), be prepared to pay the full price, if in doubt, ask the pharmacy about local rules.
