An e-prescription is a digital form of a paper prescription. As of January 8, 2020, prescriptions are issued only in this form.

The process of issuing an e-prescription is the same as in the case of a traditional prescription, but instead of giving the patient a paper prescription, the doctor gives them an appropriate code or uses the system to send it electronically (or via text message).

You will receive the data for processing your prescription online after it has been issued by an authorized person.

The electronic prescription is divided into four sections. The first section at the very top contains a barcode of several dozen digits. The pharmacist can scan it, then all information from the online prescription will be immediately displayed on their computer. Under the barcode on the left side is a 4-digit access code. Remember that the access code only works in conjunction with the PESEL number for which the e-prescription was issued. To the right of the prescription code is also the date of issue of the document. In the second section, you can also find the data of the patient and the issuing physician. In the third section, you will find the name of the drug, the date of execution, the number of pieces, packages and the dosing regimen. To the right of the data of the prescribed drug, there is also information on the method of reimbursement, if the drug is covered by a discount.

You can check your prescription in 3 ways. Log in to your IKP, where you have full access to issued prescriptions. The second solution is to visit a pharmacy, where after providing the code and PESEL number, the pharmacist is obliged to provide what kind of prescription it is, what is on it and how much it is charged. You can also contact the doctor or clinic where the document was issued.

How long a prescription is valid, similarly to its classic, paper version, depends on the type of medicine that was written on it and how it was issued by the doctor. The validity of an electronic prescription is usually 30 days. The shortest processing time is for antibiotics, the prescription is valid for only 7 days. The opposite is true for immunity preparations, so if you are wondering how long a prescription is valid for immunological drugs, it is as much as 120 days.

To check the prescription validity code, simply log in to the government website of the Patient's Online Account (IKP) or the mojeIKP mobile application.

During your visit to the pharmacy, simply provide the pharmacist with the prescription code received from your doctor via text message or email, as well as the PESEL number of the person for whom the medication was prescribed.

For both children and adults, filling an electronic prescription does not require a personal visit to the pharmacy. The prescription can be filled by anyone who receives the prescription code and PESEL number from you. Additionally, a prescription for a child should be available in your IKP (Internet Patient Account).

Just log in to the government's Internet Patient Account (IKP) website or the mojeIKP mobile app to check your prescription code. If you have set up IKP to receive prescriptions via text message/email, you will also find the prescription code in text messages or in your email box.
